Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long have you been in business?
A: This will mark our 20th year!

Q: "I've never had a good picture in my life" / "I take horrible
pictures" / "I'm not photogenic" ----Do you think you could get a decent photo of me?
A: Most definitely! Most people have never taken the time to have a professionally done portrait of themselves. They only relate to production line school pictures or candid pictures friends may have taken of them at a party. Rarely does anyone look good in these. What we do at "A Boudoir Image" is an entirely different ball game! Individual makeup and individual lighting, plus a photographer well experienced in photographing people of all types are the three main criteria.

Q: I'm extremely shy. I'm not sure I can do this. Can you help me?
A: Certainly! Jim knows what it is to be shy, as that is exactly what he was during his school years. Now, nobody is better at helping others overcome their shyness than Jim!

Q: Do you have a wardrobe or do we have to bring all our own stuff?
A: Yes, we have wardrobe, but we also encourage you to bring anything of your own to "personalize" your photos. We have lingerie in a variety of colors and sizes, western wear/denim, shirts and materials of various types and colors, plus props, including sports related equipment.

Q: Is it possible to do some outdoor photos at your studio?
A: Yes! In fact, Jim has a great private garden with a 23 foot pond, bridge, and 10 foot stream/waterfall and it's all natural and, of course, it changes with the seasons.

Q: Do you go out on location for pictures?
A: Yes! Jim loves to go on location for shoots. He finds it much easier for his clients to relax and let themselves go, particularly when out in nature, where they're not contained by 4 walls. It gives him the chance to photograph you interacting with nature. (Jim's always been a nature buff himself.)

Q: Does it cost a lot more to spend a day on location, maybe hop-scotching from spot to spot?
A: Well, it does cost a bit more. However, Jim likes those type of shoots so much, that he tries to keep expenses to a minimum, to make it reasonable for you. It also depends on whose gas you're using. It's cheaper if you take your vehicle.

Q: Would you come to my house to photograph me and does it cost more to do that?
A: Yes and yes! We do go to people's homes for shoots and yes, because of all the extra time involved, including taking down, transporting, and resetting up our studio lights and equipment, we do have to charge more. If you are within the city limits, it's usually an extra $150.

Q: How much time should I allow for the makeover and photo session?
A: Generally, we recommend about half a day or an evening. A lot depends on the type of shoot. Boudoir usually takes a bit longer than the rest. We feel this should be a treat for yourself and certainly don't want you to feel rushed.

Q: When are you available?
A: Basically, 10 am to 10 pm, 7 days a week. We will sometimes start earlier upon request and, of course, we don't quit at 10 pm if we're in the middle of a session. Occasionally, Jim will work till 1 o'clock in the morning. For parties, we sometimes go till 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning.

Q: You list different categories of photography. What do they mean?
A: The various categories are defined below:

BOUDOIR PHOTOGRAPHY

One of the most commonly asked questions!
Boudoir traditionally, but not exclusively, refers to lingerie, nude, or semi-nude photography in a bedroom, bathroom, changing room, or fireplace-type setting, but not necessarily restricted to that. Because of their nature and setting, boudoir photos tend to be more sensual, or sexually suggestive, and are usually intended as special presents for special occasions (Christmas, Valentine's, birthdays, anniversaries) for that someone special in your life, although lately we've also been doing them for ladies with their own websites. Styles may vary from Victorian to "Playboy".

Our BOUDOIR galleries are divided into 3 categories:

GALLERY #1 - NON-NUDE
GALLERY #2 - NNN (no-nude-nudes)
GALLERY #3 - NUDE (and semi-nude)

GLAMOUR PHOTOGRAPHY

Glamour encompasses a much broader area than boudoir. Glamour can be a head shot portrait, complete with makeover and a much wider variety of lighting techniques, than would be used for a normal portrait. It can also range from fully dressed to almost nude, 3/4 to full length shots, but in a studio setting with a much cleaner, simpler background, than boudoir, so the focus is totally on you. Glamour is also more likely to be shot in black and white than boudoir, though may also be color. Styles may vary from old Hollywood to modern "Maxim", depending on your own personal taste.

Our GLAMOUR galleries are divided into 4 categories:

GALLERY #1 - GLAMOUR PORTRAITS (waist-up to head shots)
GALLERY #2 - NON-NUDE (3/4 to full body)
GALLERY #3 - NNN (no-nude-nude)
GALLERY #4 - SEMI-NUDE

THEME PORTRAITS

For us, theme portraits are usually the fun photos that are work, sports, or other leisure time activities oriented. They could also be fantasy, cultural, period or character-costumed. While a whole roll of film can be devoted to one more themes, most of our clients usually just incorporate 2 or 3 frames of a glamour or boudoir roll to a theme relating either to themselves or their significant other. Theme photos can add fun and variety to a photo session. They may also be shot on location.

PHYSIQUE PHOTOS

Full or partial body, emphasizing specific muscle groups or overall form, sometimes referred to as 'body sculptures'. For bodybuilders or other fitness enthusiasts, and frequently, for us, "after" photos for Body-For-Life participants, but can be anyone interested in using all or part of their body as an art form, or wanting to record and preserve for posterity that moment in time when they were in the best of shape.

PRE-NATAL {Pregnancy} PHOTOS

Though "A Boudoir Image" was the first to advertise pregnancy photos in Calgary, we feel compelled to credit and thank actress Demi Moore for initiating, by example, the surge in this particularly unique type of photography. It is a very special time in a woman's life, when she's carrying a child. Many women, who are past their child-bearing years, have expressed regret in not having captured that moment in time on film. Allow us the privilege of sensitively capturing this special time for you. Better yet, consider letting us do a sequence of you throughout the duration of your pregnancy. Your photo session can encompass a variety of lighting techniques and be anything from fully dressed to fully nude, including various combinations thereof. We heartily encourage prospective fathers to participate in the photo session, as our most popular shots are usually those of the couple together. Also, if this is not your first child, consider bring in your baby's sibling(s) for a few extra special shots.

POST NATAL (mother/father/parents with child)

Your first professional photos with your new baby are probably the most precious you'll ever do! Jim possesses great sensitivity towards this very special time in your lives and will create images for you that you will treasure for a lifetime. Do various combinations with the baby, as well as the baby by his or herself. We even have a special offer for those who come in for both pre and post natal photography.
